A change in angle is enough to alter an entire volume. The luminous material therefore imposes a logic of phenomena rather than a logic of objects. Unlike traditional materials, which offer themselves to the hand, light cannot be grasped – only oriented. It exists only in relation: to a surface, a body, a dust, a humidity, a moment. Its power comes precisely from this instability. At every instant, it oscillates between revelation and disappearance. It produces visibility as much as it threatens it. Wherever it spreads, it creates zones of exposure; wherever it withdraws, it opens chambers of shadow, perceptual refuges. It is never neutral: it establishes sensory hierarchies, redistributes intensities, organizes gestures and proximities. A luminous architecture is therefore not an illuminated architecture: it is an architecture that accepts light as an active force, capable of transforming experience.

Light does not unfold only in space; it fabricates its own space. It thickens or hollows it, stretches or compresses it. Grazing light transforms a flat surface into a topography. Diffuse light generates a directionless, almost liquid atmosphere. Orbital light, slow and repetitive, produces a space-time, a perceptual cycle. The luminous material thus acts as a motor: it sets architecture in motion, not by moving masses but by shifting perceptions. Where solid materials fix, light activates. Where construction stabilizes, light drifts.

This drift is essential. Light introduces time into matter. It reveals architecture not as a uniform presence but as a succession of states. The same wall may appear dry, porous, sharp, or velvety depending on the hour, angle, or climate. Light is the operator of these metamorphoses: it makes visible the latent temporalities of matter – its variations of texture, warmth, granularity. It reveals that nothing is fixed, even in what seems most stable. To think of light as material is therefore to embrace architecture as phenomenon: an articulation of forces, rhythms, appearances.

Light also directly affects bodies. It modifies behaviour before we are even aware of it. A dark zone slows movement; a halo attracts and exposes; an oblique beam creates an involuntary alignment of gestures; a vibrating glow introduces unease or expectation. Light acts as a silent dramaturgy: it composes intensities, distances, relationships. It shapes temporary communities, gathered by a shared luminous climate. In this sense, it exceeds perception: it becomes political, social, relational.

Considering light as a material also means accepting its elusive nature. One does not build with it; one composes with its conditions of existence: an angle, a gap, a surface, a transparency, a mist, a movement. This composition is always open, exposed to uncertainty, dependent on the real. Light resists closure; it calls for experience rather than control. It demands a form of radical, almost microscopic attention to phenomena that cannot be stabilized – only accompanied.

It is in this spirit that in situ experimentation in Barcelona’s Turbine Hall takes on its full meaning. The aim is not to produce a spectacular device, but to confront this unstable material directly with the immensity of the space: to observe how it is lost, amplified, diffracted within it. A few gestures are enough – a tilting mirror, a translucent surface, a barely perceptibly oriented beam – for light to invent its own trajectories. The building becomes an atmospheric laboratory where the goal is not to control light but to let it act, to let it reveal the tensions, latent volumes, and sensitive potentialities already contained in the space. The intervention is nothing more than the trigger: what allows light to manifest fully as material, and the place to become a medium for directly experiencing its power.

At every interface, Fresnel’s laws operate silently. A change in refractive index, an infinitesimal variation in angle, and luminous energy redistributes itself between reflection and transmission. A translucent surface thickens a volume through internal reflections; an oblique mirror cancels a glare; an edge becomes vibrant under the effect of the evanescent wave. The most delicate phenomenology – glare, veil, halo, blur – meets the most precise science. Light is a lived phenomenon, but also a measurable one, and the gaze navigates between these two regimes without distinguishing them.

For several years, the prototypes developed by Bruther have formed a territory of experimentation where solid matter meets unstable phenomena: airflows, heat, sound, mechanical oscillations, structural vibrations. Each one is a way of testing architecture at full scale, not through form but through behaviour. These artifacts – motors, mobile panels, sensitive membranes, resonant surfaces – have always sought to reduce matter to its minimum in order to liberate action, flow, phenomenon.

The luminous devices designed for the 2026 World Congress of Architects in Barcelona extend this lineage precisely: the same economy, the same rigor, the same attention to the invisible forces that shape space. They do not seek to produce a form but a behaviour. They activate light as a living, unstable, relational material. They explore its physical limits – diffusion, polarization, total reflection, dispersion – as one would explore those of a raw material. They articulate mechanical gestures and optical phenomena, Fresnel’s laws and perceptual shifts, technical rigor and sensory drift.

These prototypes are not answers. They are instruments of observation. Luminous organisms, always in imbalance, always in the process of becoming.

The film documents observations at the XFEL facility, which can be read as a light factory. At first glance, the light itself is not directly visible; rather, it manifests through what can be described as “desiring-machines that produce reality.” By shaping the geometry of magnetic fields, the qualities of light, such as wavelength, intensity, and polarization, are tailored. Its path, focal size, and energy are controlled by mirrors, lenses, and monochromators, all suspended within vacuum chambers.

Accelerating electrons to relativistic energies effectively converts virtual light stored in a static magnetic field into real, emitted light, released in flashes as a wake. Within a series of alternating magnets, these emissions are amplified in a process analogous to a laser but operating in the X-ray spectrum.

The facility can be understood as a heterotopic space in which ordinary regimes of light, time, and visibility are suspended. It generates modes of perception that exceed human sensory limits, delegating vision to machines and reconfiguring the relationships between bodies, matter, and knowledge.

Light functions here as a messenger in disguise; a medium through which the world becomes perceptible and knowable. The film itself forms an entity in relation to the surrounding installations, partially operating as a two-dimensional specimen, and in doing so, also modulates the spatial conditions of light within the environment
